Beatles still topping charts, 42 years on.

The Beatles

As part of the Jubilee celebrations BBC Radio 2 have compiled a list of the top selling singles acts of the last 60 years. Unsurprisingly, The Beatles came out on top just holding off competition from Elvis and Sir Cliff Richard in 2nd and 3rd places respectively. Tony Blackburn will host a show to be broadcast today on the station at 2pm. There’s  a few more modern artists in the mix too, Madonna coming in at 4th and even Rihanna holding her own at tenth just behind David Bowie.

We can testify to the enduring appeal of the band having quite a few Beatles tribute acts on the books and the guys think it amusing that I’m the only one on the Freak music team who was alive when they were still a band.

The Beatles connections with Edinburgh are well known, founder member and original bass player Stuart Sutcliffe was born here and as a child John Lennon used to come and stay with relatives in the Murrayfield area of the city.
